2011 Asti Winery Riverbank Stabilization and Fish Habitat Enhancement Project

Russian River

Cloverdale, California

The Asti Winery Riverbank Stabilization and Fish Habitat Enhancement Project was constructed in the summer of 2011. The project was divided up into three eroding sites along almost a mile of river front owned by the Asti Winery. One of the techniques used in the project was a series of vegetated boulder wing deflectors constructed at site 2. Below are a series of photographs showing site 2 before, during and after construction of the vegetated boulder wing deflectors.

Below the project pictures are some underwater footage of steelhead fry swimming among the willow branches of the vegetated boulder wing deflector.

"a3"

A large tracked excavator was used to construct the vegetated boulder wing deflectors. Here the excavator has begun excavating a ramp to begin construction of the structure.

"a4"

The excavator placed 2 to 4 ton rock to construct the first layer of the deflector.

"a5"

The labor crew placed small rock between the large boulders in a process called hand chinking.

After the first platform was constructed, bringing the structure above water, a layer of river gravel was poured on top of the rock. Live willow branches were then placed on to the structure. In the picture above the willow branches are staged in the river next to the structure. During construction, the willow branches must be kept moist after they are harvested.

"a7"

After the live willow branches were placed, more river gravel is poured on the willow branches followed by a layer of large boulders. Lastly, coir erosion control fabric was placed on top of the boulders. These process were repeated until the structure is built up to the top of bank.
